Sleepless in Sora: tremors in Lazio

Lazio’s emergency services remain in a state of high alert after Frosinone and – to a lesser extent – Viterbo recorded a total of some 200 tremors in just under three weeks.

Twelve earthquakes reaching as high as 3.5 on the Richter scale sent shudders through the mountainous regions of south-eastern Lazio yesterday in seismic activity described as “highly unusual” by experts.
Tremors in gardens of Castel Sant’ Angelo

A small earthquake tremor struck Rome yesterday afternoon with the epicentre the gardens at Castel Sant’Angelo, a stone’s throw away from the Vatican. At around 14.44, seismographs at the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology registered a movement of 2.1 on the Richter scale which was felt in Rome
Aftershocks lead to safety checks at Rome schools

Two days after the Easter holidays and inspectors are checking the safety of the city’s schools because of the ongoing seismic activity hitting central Italy. No buildings are judged at risk, say inspectors.
Aftershocks from L’Aquila shake Rome

The disaster in L’Aquila and today’s aftershocks have also resulted in damage and evacuations in Rome. Of the numerous aftershocks felt in the capital – causing swaying of furniture on upper floors – the strongest tremor was this evening, at 19.42, registering 5.3 on the Richter and almost as big as the first devastating seismic shift on Monday.
