Death toll mounts after Abruzzo earthquake disaster
by Anthony Smith (staff) | Monday, April 6th, 2009
Central Italy was heavily rocked at 3.32AM on 6 April by an earthquake of a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. While the tremor was felt strongly in Rome and at least as far away as Tuscany and Campania, the epicentre was in the mountainous areas of the Abruzzo region, close to the regional capital of L’Aquila. The natural disaster has so far claimed 250 lives, all in L’Aquila and its hinterland, with thousands more injured and/or rendered homeless. A controversy has emerged over the fact that politicians had played down warnings made by experts over the past 10 days that an earthquake was imminent.
